The Ummah Liberation Army is the political wing of the Ummah (meaning Community of Muslims in Arabic) Party, the main political opposition group in Sudan. The Ummah Party, headed by Sadiq al-Mahdi (meaning Guided One in Arabic who is considered to be the Islamic Messiah), was the ruling party before the 1989 coup that entrenched the more fundamentalist and murderous National Islamist Front.
The ULA was responsible for destroying an oil pipeline in Somalia in 1999. Their leader, a two-time Prime Minister of Sudan, Sadiq al-Mahdi proved to be ineffective in his brief time in power in 1966 and 1986. Overthrown in a 1989 coup, al-Mahdi has been the Ummah Party leader and commander of its military wing, the Ummah Liberation Army.
