Saudi Hate Publications Fill American Mosques

Freedom House, a Washington based organization founded by Eleanor Roosevelt, and now chaired by former C.I.A. Director, James Woolsey, conducted a survey of literature found in America's leading Mosques. They came to three conclusions, two of which were accurate. The Saudi government and royal family are the primary purveyors of Islamic religious materials in America and worldwide. The overwhelming majority of the Islamic literature printed by the Saudi government and distributed in American mosques and Islamic schools is uncivilized, hateful, violent, and treasonous. But then they claimed, without evidence or reason, that such materials were reflective of Wahhabi extremism, and were therefore a corruption of Islam.

Freedom House's stated bias for religious tolerance may have contributed to their error, but I suspect their deceptive view is more likely born of complete ignorance. They analyzed 200 books and pamphlets but didn't bother reviewing the only five that actually mattered: Ibn Ishaq's Sira (the only biographical account of Muhammad written within 200 years of his death), Tabari's Ta'rikh (Islam's earliest and most authentic history of Muhammad and his formation of Islam), the topical Hadith of Bukhari and Muslim (Islam's most revered collection of Muhammad's words and deeds), and the Qur'an (a book devoid of context and chronology and thus dependent upon the Sira, Ta'rikh, and Hadith accounts). These prime sources contain all that is known about Muhammad, his god, and his religion. They are fundamental Islam.

I am pleased that Freedom House conducted this survey, translated these documents, and made the incriminating evidence available to everyone for free. The very survival of the civilized world is dependent upon us understanding that Islam is mankind's greatest enemy. Yet, I am deeply disturbed by their continual positioning of Islam's uncivil and treasonous rhetoric as representing a corrupted and extremist view when most every word of what they uncovered came directly out of the Qur'an, Sira, Ta'rikh, and Hadith - collectively the Islamic scriptures. To infer that Saudi Wahhabism is an inaccurate view of Islam is equivalent to saying that Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, and Paul presented an inaccurate and extremist view of Christianity.

If America is going to survive, average Americans must do two things our religious leaders, politicians, scholars, and media are either unable or unwilling to accomplish simultaneously. We must come to know and then think. Freedom House was generous in making this vital information about the nature of the Saudis and Islam available, but their unthinking commentary on it renders it unusable.

When we don't know, we can't think - as understanding the relationship between things is the essence of thinking. So when we don't think, we cannot understand these vital relationships. Freedom House came to the conclusion that the best way to eliminate the threat of hatful and violent "Wahhabi" Islam, and to save America, was to ask Islamic imams to remove the Saudi government literature from their mosques and schools. But since these materials are all based on the Islamic scriptures, it would be like removing a bucket of water from the ocean.

This strategy is analogous to America's "War on Terrorism." It's senseless and useless. Islam is the enemy; terror is just a tactic. And so long as we obfuscate the source of our pain and lash out blindly at its symptoms, or "tactics," Islam will manufacture 100 new Jihadists for every 1 we kill.

Freedom House trumpets another deadly misconception in their article as well - that of moderate Muslims and Islamic reform. The sole arbitrator on the subject, Muhammad, said in his Qur'an that a Muslim who does not leave his home to fight Jihad in Allah's Cause ceases to be a Muslim. Allah calls them "hypocrites" in the 9^th surah and orders good Jihadist Muslims to kill them in the 4^th, so that he can personally attend to their torture in hell. As for reform, Islam's lone prophet said, "Islam cannot change." And in that regard, he was a prophet. The religion is just as deceitful, destructive, and deadly as it was when Muhammad was inventing it in a milieu of mass murders, piracy, rape, plunder and slavery. Reforming Islam is akin to thwarting Nazism by asking Hitler to edit the most deceitful, destructive, and deadly passages out of Mein Kampf.

Knowing that the very survival of the free world is at stake, under the auspisus of the Fair Use Doctrine, I am going to share some of what Freedom House discovered in America's mosques, all the while challenging their commentary. I want you to know what contemporary Muslims are saying. I want you to know that contemporary Islam is indistinguishable from fundamental Islam. And I want you to know that ignorance of Islam, and toleration of it, will cause Americans to lose all we hold dear - our freedoms, our property and our lives.

It's interesting that FH was founded by Eleanor Roosevelt. FDR had little regard for the covenants of our forefathers and enacted all manner of socialist entitlement programs in direct conflict with the United States Constitution. He not only ruled like a dictator, his decisions caused two billion people to live under dictatorial tyranny. And there are no dictatorships of the far right. A tyranny is by definition a liberal use of power. Hitler was a socialist. His National Socialist German Workers Party exercised greater control over the nation and labor than did Stalin's U.S.S.R.

The research, translation and principle analysis of the materials for the report were carried out by both Muslims and non-Muslims who wish to remain anonymous for reasons of security. In light of the recent targeted assassination and death threats for speaking out against Islamic extremism in the Netherlands, such concerns appear especially valid. All involved did so out of a conviction that the Saudi Arabian publications in this study, which espouse an ideology of hate and purport to be the authoritative interpretation of Islam, continue to be in plentiful supply at some of our nation's main mosques and continue to be used as principal educational resources on Islam for Muslims in America. We also wish to acknowledge the many Muslims who have requested our help in exposing Saudi extremism in the hope of freeing their communities from ideological strangulation; they have done so in the firm belief that public awareness of this problem will prompt the moderate majority of American Muslims to take steps to remedy it.

Yes, it is true, Islam is deadly and Muslims are ruthless murderers - killing those with the courage and character to expose them. But it is folly to believe these barbaric acts are perpetrated to serve the interests of the Saudi dictators rather than the Cause of Allah. Moreover, since 80% of the mosques in America are connected in one way or another to Saudi funds or sponsorship, how can "the majority of American Muslims" be "moderate?" Who is their prophet? Who is their god? What are their scriptures? If the answer to any of these is Muhammad, Allah, the Qur'an and Hadith, their religion cannot be "moderate," no matter how one defines the term.

METHODOLOGY

Freedom House's Center for Religious Freedom decided to undertake this project after a number of Muslims and other experts publicly raised concerns about Saudi state influence on American religious life. This report complements a May 2003 recommendation of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent government agency, that the U.S. government conduct a study on Saudi involvement in propagating internationally a "religious ideology that explicitly promotes hate, intolerance, and other human rights violations, and in some cases violence, toward members of other religious groups, both Muslims and non-Muslims." In releasing this report, the Center is also mindful of one of the key findings of the 9/11 Commission Report: "Education that teaches tolerance, the dignity and value of each individual, and respect for different beliefs is a key element in any global strategy to eliminate Islamist terrorism."

Very little the 9/11 Commission wrote was "mindful." I have posted a review of the Commission's Report on the site.

Education doesn't teach tolerance. Like hate, tolerance is the byproduct of indoctrination. To be educated is to know and to think. To be tolerant is to not know and to not think. The least compassionate thing a society can do is to be tolerant of the merciless ideology of Islam. The tolerance of Islam will exacerbate terrorism, not eliminate it.

To be educated about Islam is to know that it cannot be tolerated - that it is the enemy of freedom, enlightenment, prosperity, and civility. Fundamental Islam is murderous and treasonous; it inspires, instigates, and rewards terrorism. As such, Islam exists outside the protections of the First Amendment.

The phenomenon of Saudi hate ideology is worldwide, but its occurrence in the United States has received scant attention. This report begins to probe in detail the content of the Wahhabi ideology that the Saudi government has worked to propagate through books and other publications within our borders. While substantial analysis has been previously published on Saudi Wahhabism in other countries, few specifics have been reported on the content of Wahhabi indoctrination within the United States.  Part of the reason may be that the vast majority of the written materials are in Arabic. Also, U.S. security investigations have focused on stopping money flows and curbing the activities of individual extremists resulting in, among other actions, the recent expulsions of dozens of religious teachers with Saudi diplomatic passports. We have ascertained that as of December 2004, Saudi-connected resources and publications on extremist ideology remain common reading and educational material in some of America's main mosques.

Wahhab wasn't the least bit inventive. He wasn't even a reformer. He was just a good Muslim who based his Islam on the Islamic scriptures - the Qur'an, Sira, Ta'rikh, and Hadith. Wahhab was to Muhammad as Lenin was to Marx. Nothing Wahhab said, nothing the Saudi's wrote, differs from Muhammad's words and deeds as they were reported in the books that Islam comprises. Without understanding the consequence, FH admitted as much in their report when they combined these terms: "Wahhabi or salafi interpretations of Islam."

The "salafs" are Islam's founding fathers. Without their oral testimony, Muhammad, Allah, Islam, the Qur'an, Hadith, and Sunnah (Muhammad's example), would be completely unknown. While their words and deeds were the antithesis of Christ's Disciples, they were Islam's equivalent. The Concise Encyclopedia of Islam says of the salaf : "They were the first generations of Muslims, considered by later generations to be the most authoritative source for Islamic practice and guidance. The salaf were the Companions of the Prophet. The Wahhabis do not accord a special validity to the opinions and practices introduced after that generation, seeing them as unwarranted innovations."

While Islam is wrong, the Wahhabis are right. If Muhammad, Islam's lone founder and prophet, Allah's singular conduit, got Islam wrong, then Islam is wrong. Only a fool would build a new structure on a faulty foundation of sand. To revise or moderate man's most deceitful, destructive and deadly dogma, rather than expose and reject it, is the folly of fools.

The analysis of methodology which follows is both sound and important. However, when you recognize that GWB and his father revel in their relationship with the Fahd family, and have compromised America's security to protect and advance their alliance with evil, it should send shivers up and down your spine. Crown Prince Abdullah, the dictator in charge of Saudi Arabia, was GWB's first Crawford Ranch guest following the Saudi Arabian dominated 9/11 suicide bombings. Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi Ambassador, learned of GWB's planed invasion of Iraq during the time the president was denying his intentions to his own people. In fact, Prince Bandar was invited into the White House Situation Room - a place labeled off limits to all foreign nationals. When the initial Pentagon and Congressional reports came out linking the Saudi Arabian government, and thus the Fahd Crown Princes, to 9/11, GWB blocked the release of their reports. It makes you wonder whose side he's on.

In order to document Saudi influence, the material for this report was gathered from a selection of more than a dozen mosques and Islamic centers in American cities, including Los Angeles, Oakland, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Washington, and New York. In most cases, these sources are the most prominent and well-established mosques in their areas. They have libraries and publication racks for mosque-goers. Some have full-or part-time schools and, as the 9/11 Commission Report observed, such "Saudi-funded Wahhabi schools are often the only Islamic schools."

The material collected consists of over 200 books and other publications, many of which titles were available in several mosques. Some 90 percent of the publications are in Arabic, though some are in English. With one exception, the materials for this study were in Arabic and English. The Center had two independent translators review each Arabic document.

All the documents analyzed here have some connection to the government of Saudi Arabia. In some instances, they have five connections. The publications under study each have at least two of the following links to Saudi Arabia. They are:

• official publications of a government ministry;
• distributed by the Saudi embassy;
• consist of religious pronouncements and commentary by authorities appointed to positions by the Saudi crown;
• representative of the established Wahhabi ideology of Saudi Arabia; and/or
• disseminated through a mosque or center supported by the Saudi crown.

In many examples, the Saudi link is readily apparent from the seal or name appearing on the cover of the publications of the Saudi Embassy in Washington, or of the Saudi cultural, educational or religious affairs ministries, or of the Saudi Air Force.

Some of the mosques and centers, such as the King Fahd Mosque in Los Angeles and the Islamic Center in Washington, are openly acknowledged to receive official support by the Saudi king as recorded on his website. While some observers distinguish between funding from the Saudi state and donations made by individual members of the Saudi royal family, it should be noted that King Fahd makes no such distinction. His website asserts, "King Fahd gave his support, either personally or through his Government." The website also asserts that "the cost of King Fahd's efforts in this field has been astronomical, amounting to many billions of Saudi Riyals," resulting in "some 210 Centers wholly or partly financed by Saudi Arabia, more than 1,500 Mosques and 202 colleges and almost 2,000 schools for educating Muslim children."

Furthermore, the Saudi government has directly staffed some of these institutions. The King Fahd mosque, the main mosque in Los Angeles, from which several of these publications were gathered, employed an imam, Fahad al Thumairy, who was an accredited diplomat of the Saudi Arabian consulate from 1996 until 2003, when he was barred from reentering the United States because of terrorist connections. The 9/11 Commission Report describes the imam as a "well-known figure at the King Fahd mosque and within the Los Angeles Muslim community," who was reputed to be an "Islamic fundamentalist and a strict adherent to orthodox Wahhabi doctrine" and observed that he "may have played a role in helping the [9/11] hijackers establish themselves on their arrival in Los Angeles."

Several hate-filled publications in this study were also gathered from the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in Fairfax, Virginia. According to investigative reports in the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post , Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi Ambassador to the U.S., served as chairman of this school's Board of Trustees, and some 16 other personnel there held Saudi diplomatic visas until they were expelled for extremism by the State Department in 2004. Until late 2003, the institute was an official adjunct campus of the Imam Mohammed Ibn-Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, part of Saudi Arabia's state-run university system, funded and controlled by the Saudi Ministry of Education. Although Saudi Arabia claims to have severed official links with it, the Institute the Saudis established continues to operate in northern Virginia.

Some of the works were published by the Al-Haramain Foundation, run from Saudi Arabia with branch offices in the United States until the FBI blocked its assets in February 2004, finding that it was directly funding al Qaeda. In October 2004, the Saudi government's Ministry for Islamic Affairs dissolved the foundation, and, according to a senior Saudi official, its assets will be folded into a new Saudi National Commission for Charitable Work Abroad.

Some of the Wahhabi materials in this study were printed by publishers and libraries functioning as publishing houses in Saudi Arabia. Some of these are directly government-supported and-controlled, such as the King Fahd National Library. Others are monitored closely by the state, which does not grant the free right to expression, and, according to the State Department, the government's Ministry of Information has the authority to appoint and remove all editors.

A prolific source of fatwas condemning "infidels" in this collection was Sheik ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Bin ‘Abdillah Bin Baz (died 1999), who was appointed by King Fahd in 1993 to the official post of Grand Mufti. As Grand Mufti, he was upheld by the government of Saudi Arabia as its highest religious authority. Bin Baz was a government appointee who received a regular government salary, served at the pleasure of the King and presided over the Saudi Permanent Committee for Scientific Research and the Issuing of Fatwas , an office of the Saudi government. His radically dichotomous mode of thinking, coupled with his persistent demonizing of non-Muslims and tolerant Muslims, runs through the fatwas in these publications.

Bin Baz is famously remembered by many Saudis for a ruling he issued in 1966 declaring the world flat. He was also responsible for the fatwa , unique in Islam, barring Saudi women from driving. In subsequent years Bin Baz seemed to go out of his way to pronounce against Christians, Jews, and "infidel" Westerners. His fatwas , which carry considerable weight, have been circulated through official Saudi diplomatic channels to mosques and schools throughout the world, including some in the United States, and have been particularly influential in radicalizing Muslim youth at home and abroad. The extremist views proclaimed in these official fatwas belie what Adel al-Jubeir, the articulate Saudi spokesman and special advisor to Crown Prince Abdullah, asserts during televised press conferences about fanatical sheiks in the Kingdom being mainly "underground," and the fatwas they issue being merely expressions of "their personal opinions." Though Bin Baz is now dead, his fanatical fatwas continue to be treated as authoritative by the Saudi government.

The bulk of the material was collected in November and December 2003. In December 2004, additional samples were collected from mosques in Washington, Falls Church, Los Angeles, Orange County and Chicago showing that the problem continues as this report goes to press. One of the documents from Saudi Arabia's Islamic Affairs Ministry bears the post-9/11 publication date of 2002, while most of the other titles were published in the 1980s and 1990s. Notwithstanding the fact that some of the titles were published by groups and entities that in the last two years have been shut down or have broken ties with the Saudi government following U.S. government terrorism investigations, and despite the Saudi government advertising campaign that their textbooks are being revised, the offensive titles and similar publications remain widely available in America, and in some cases dominate mosque library shelves, and continue to be used to educate American Muslims.

Copies of the documents and their translations are kept on file at Freedom House. A listing of the mosques and centers where these publications were found and a bibliography of the documents analyzed in this report follow.

The Foreword which follows contains some interesting insights into the conflict between Sunni and Shiite Muslims hat we are witnessing in Iraq and it provides some rather useful historical context which most Americans are unaware.

(This foreword is adapted from testimony delivered on May 22, 2002, before the House Committee on International Relations Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.)

Since the Saudi conquest of the Hejaz [Central Arabia] from the Hashemites [The Hashashen were Islam's first suicide martyrs. Using hashish to drug their militants, the Hashashen ultimately controlled most of the Middle East.] in 1924 and the formal establishment of the state of Saudi Arabia in 1932 [a gift from Great Britain following the defeat of the Ottoman Turks in WWI] - more or less simultaneously with the discovery of huge oil deposits in the kingdom - Saudi Arabia has been of substantial importance in the world. So although the Saudis have existed as a tribe and a family in control of a small portion of Arabia for centuries, their influence, even their existence as a nation, has come about within the lifespan of many now living, including the kingdom's effective ruler today, Crown Prince Abdullah.

Until less than thirty years ago, our relations with the Saudis were generally smooth. We were on the same side in the cold war, and the Saudis valued our support (and we theirs) against Soviet influence in the Mideast. Of course the oil embargo of 1973 created major stress, but the watershed year was 1979, when Khomeini came to power in Iran and extremists took over the holiest of Islam's shrines, the Mosque in Mecca, which was under the protection of the Saudi King; it was reclaimed by the Saudis only after substantial loss of both life and face.

The Saudis chose after the twin shocks of that year to strike a Faustian bargain with the Wahhabi sect and not only to accommodate their views about propriety, pious behavior, and Islamic law, but effectively to turn over education in the Kingdom to them and later to fund the expansion into Pakistan and elsewhere of their extreme, hostile, anti-modern, and anti-infidel form of Islam. The other side of the bargain was that if the Wahhabis would concentrate their attacks on, essentially, the U.S. and Israel, the Saudi elite would get a more-or-less free ride from the Wahhabis and the corruption within the Kingdom would be overlooked.

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) was a disciple of Ibn Taymiyah, a Syrian born Sunni Muslim who fought Muslim Mongols. Taymiyah in turn was influenced by el-Kharij (of which Osama bin Laden is a devotee). The Kharij, meaning "Ones Who Goes Out," were the first to follow in the footsteps of Muhammad. They were fundamentalist Muslims and terrorists. While Islamic terrorism is the legacy of Muhammad, el-Kharij established the model that all Islamic terrorist groups emulate today. They forced Muslims to obey the Qur'an's teachings on Jihad and sent countless Islamic youth out on assassination missions to kill Muslims and non-Muslims alike. If they did not fight, they labeled the Muslim youth hypocrites and murdered them in accordance with Allah's instructions.

El-Kharij, like Muhammad before them, were terrorists - willing to brutalize and plunder any civilian center in their path. Like their prophet, they were slave traders, rapists, womanizers, sexists, and thieves. They are credited with reinforcing Muhammad's teachings on the value of deception, dishonesty, and political assassination.

Taymiyah studied both Muhammad and el-Kharij. He taught that Mongolian Muslims were not true Muslims, and thus should not be allowed to rule. Taymiyah, not Wahhab, wrote the words which resonate in Saudi Arabia today: "Any Muslim who submits to the authority of a moderate Muslim, helps them or deals with them, becomes one of them - an infidel - and must be killed." Taymiyah's guiding principles were: "Muslims should resist, fight and overturn any Islamic government that doesn't govern in strict compliance with Islamic law and that Muslims were compelled by Allah to wage Jihad on anyone whose beliefs differed from Islam - especially Christians and Jews." As a result, Taymiayah and his followers declared that the Mongol Muslims were hypocrites and apostates. They attacked them viciously. With each blow they echoed Muhammad's no tolerance policy for pacifists that reverberates throughout the Medina surahs of the Qur'an.

Muhammad al-Wahhab applied Muhammad's, the Kharij's, and Taymiyah's strategy to overturn the Turkish government, establishing an Islamic state in what would eventually become Saudi Arabia. While he was an effective warrior, Wahhab was not a religious reformer or interpreter.

As a result, this Wahhabi sect, which would have been regarded as recently as fifty years ago as an austere, fringe group by a large majority of Muslims, is now extremely powerful and influential in the Muslim world due to Saudi government support and the oil wealth of the Arabian peninsula. Former Secretary of State George Shultz, not known for either a propensity for overstatement or for hostility to the Saudis, calls this deflection of Wahhabi anger toward us 'a grotesque protection racket.'

This presentation of Wahhab as a sect of Islam, rather than fundamental Islam, is both erroneous and dangerous. By any rational definition, fundamentalists cannot be a fringe group. Moreover, every poll taken of Muslims living in the Middle East shows that fundamentalist Islamic groups like al-Qaeda, are viewed favorably by 70% to 95% of Muslims.

This Faustian bargain has had a huge effect on opinion in the Kingdom. Bernard Lewis points out that throughout most of the history of Islam in most parts of the Muslim world, Muslims have generally been more tolerant than many other religions - Jews and Christians, as "People of the Book", were dealt with especially tolerantly. Today in the Kingdom, however, young people are systematically infused with hostility for "infidels."

Bernard Lewis wrote favorably of Muslims only because he despises Christians. To quote Lewis as an authority on Islamic behavior is embarrassing. But more importantly, throughout most of the history of Islam and in most parts of the Muslim world, Muslims were intolerant of all other religions, especially Christianity and Judaism. Muslims were intolerant because the Qur'an orders them to enslave, tax, kidnap, mutilate, and murder all infidels and unbelievers - terms the Qur'an defines as "Christians" in the 5^th surah. And Muhammad said, "Kill every Jew" in the Sira, Ta'rikh and Hadith.

Moreover, most young Saudis are not equipped when they graduate from school to perform the jobs necessary to operate a modern economy. Instead many are employed, if that is the right word, as, e.g., religious police - walking the streets to harass women whose veils may not fully cover their faces, for example. Young Saudis' anger based on their lack of useful work and their indoctrination is palpable. It is not an accident that 15 of the 19 terrorists who attacked us on September 11 were Saudis. The New York Times (January 27, 2002) cited a poll conducted by Saudi Intelligence, and shared with the U.S. government, that over 95% of Saudis between the ages of 25 and 41 have sympathy for Osama bin Laden. Whether this report from the Saudi government of their young adults' views is accurate or distorted, it makes an important point about hostility to us, either by the government, the people, or both.

The Saudi-funded, Wahhabi-operated export of hatred for us reaches around the globe. It is well known that the religious schools of Pakistan that educated a large share of the Taliban and al Qaeda are Wahhabi.

No, they are Islamic. The Pakistanis are far more likely to read Q'tub (an Egyptian) and Taymiyah (a Syrian), than Wahhab, and they will invest 1,000 hours in the Qur'an and Hadith for every 1 focused on more modern commentators.

But Pakistan is not the sole target. I had in my office recently a moderate Muslim leader from an Asian country. He was in the U.S., seeking to obtain funds from foundations, so that he could have printed elementary school textbooks to compete with the Wahhabi-funded textbooks that are flooding his country and that are being made available to schools at little or no cost. The Wahhabi textbooks in his country, like textbooks in Saudi Arabia, teach that it is the obligation of all Muslims to consider all infidels the enemy.

America's State Department did fund the production of Islamic textbooks for Malaysia - spending Christian taxpayer money on books that reminded Muslims that they are to "wipe the Christians out to the last." And they must have worked. Malaysian Muslims have murdered 300,000 Christians in East Timor over the last 20 years.

Americans are not normally comfortable distinguishing between what is acceptable and what is not acceptable within a religion, unless they are, say, debating views within their own church. Because of the First Amendment and American culture, most Americans tend not to make judgments about others' religions. But the Wahhabis and the Islamists whom they work with and support have a long political reach and their views have substantial political effect. Some of the consequences of this 'grotesque protection racket' have been quite lethal: American deaths and the failure to apprehend the terrorists who killed them.

And I dare say, the former C.I.A. Director is aiding and abetting our ignorance of this lethal foe by errantly saying that Islam is peaceful and tolerant while only the "Wahhabis and the Islamists whom they work with and support them" are violent and murderous. Moreover, Islam has always been more political than religious. Muhammad was a warlord and pirate, not a prophet. Americans have been led to believe that Islam is just a religion and thus must be tolerated. If it were correctly view as a political doctrine that advocates the overthrow of all non-Islamic governments, we would be in a better position to prevail against it.

One analogue for Wahhabism's political influence today might be the extremely angry form taken by much of German nationalism in the period after WW I. Not all angry and extreme German nationalists (or their sympathizers in the U.S.) in that period were or became Nazis. But just as angry and extreme German nationalism of that period was the soil in which Nazism grew, Wahhabi and Islamist extremism today is the soil in which al Qaeda and its sister terrorist organizations are growing. We need to recognize the problem posed by the international spread of this hate ideology, including within the American homeland.

Actually the most accurate correlation is between Islam and Nazism, not between Arabs and Arians. I dedicated 75 pages of Prophet of Doom to a side by side comparison between Hitler's MeinKampf and Muhammad's Qur'an and Hadith. Apart from time and place, they are indistinguishable. These juxtapositions can be found in the following chapters: Demented Deity, Mein Kampf, Islam's Holocaust, Blood & Booty, and Profitable Prophet Plan. Please read them now.

This report is a first step in an effort to contain the destructive ideology being proliferated by the Wahhabis within the American homeland. Hopefully it will lead to the removal of tracts spreading hatred within American mosques, libraries and Islamic centers. The publications analyzed in this Report and others like them that advocate an ideology of hatred have no place in a nation founded on religious freedom and toleration.

I think it is better to expose, repudiate and ban organizations whose constitution and founders commands the murder of millions, incites terrorism, and treasonously calls the overthrow of all non-Islamic governments. Our former C.I.A. director wants to rearrange their reading material. So were do you stand? Do you have an informed opinion? Have you read Tea With Terrorists and Prophet of Doom ? Are you aware of who the terrorists really are and why they kill? Do you know how to stop them?

But I have to give the Director credit for one thing. While he has misidentified the enemy, he has correctly surmised that Islam "has no place in a nation founded on...freedom.

INTRODUCTION

The Center for Religious Freedom has gathered samples of over 200 texts over the last twelve months - all from American mosques and all spread, sponsored or otherwise generated by Saudi Arabia. They demonstrate the ongoing indoctrination of Muslims in the United States in the hostility and belligerence of Saudi Arabia's hardline Wahhabi sect of Islam.

All Saudis must be Muslim, and the Saudi government, in collaboration with the country's religious establishment, enforces and imposes Wahhabism as the official state doctrine. In 2004, the United States State Department designated Saudi Arabia as a "Country of Particular Concern" under the International Religious Freedom Act after finding for many years that "religious freedom did not exist" in the Kingdom. The Saudi policy of denying religious freedom is explained in one of the tracts in this study: " Freedom of thinking requires permitting the denial of faith and attacking what is sacred, glorifying falsehood and defending the heretics, finding fault in religion and letting loose the ideas and pens to write of disbelief as one likes, and to put ornaments on sin as one likes ."

This comes right out of the Qur'an and Hadith. It's not Wahhab doctrine; it's mainstream Islam. But before I prove this verdict, I'd like you to understand the source and purpose of the topical Muhammad quotes I am about to share with you. The following introduces the "Muhammad's Own Words" Appendix of Prophet of Doom .

Prophet of Doom provides a comprehensive, contextual, and chronological review of the Islamic scriptures starting with the religion's rendition of creation and ending with the terror it inspired. The book brings Islam's five earliest and most trusted sources together, putting their words and deeds into the context of time and place to expose what the dogma's founder had to say about himself, his ambition, religion, and god. There is no better way to understand Muhammad, Allah, or Islam - or to evaluate their legacy.

When reviewing the primary papers of any dogma we must be mindful that context comes in three forms. There is the context of historical chronology - that of circumstance, place, people, and time. There is the context of adjacency - the proximity of related words and thoughts within the writings themselves. And context can be topical; in this case similar themes can be brought together and organized by subject. All forms of context provide clarity.

Unfortunately, the Qur'an fails its faithful on all three counts. The book lacks any semblance of chronology. It is deficient when it comes to providing the required context of place, people, and time. Adjacent verses are usually unrelated and often contradictory. In the Meccan surahs there is a preoccupation with railing against Muhammad's mockers and with describing Allah's torments, but the rejections and condemnations are strewn haphazardly through the text. This is also true of the Medina surahs and their fixation on submit and obey, perform and pay, fight or burn. Yes these are themes, and they are repetitive, but they are not presented in cohesive groupings.

The Qur'an's failures in this regard dictate Prophet of Doom's length, order, and format. The narrative and chronological Hadith compiled by Ishaq and Tabari were required to provide the Qur'an with the context of circumstance, time, and place that it otherwise lacked. Bukhari's and Muslim's topical Hadith were used to amplify important Islamic themes. Therefore, Muhammad's message has never been as clear as it is in these pages. Unfortunately for humankind, unmasked, his message is repulsive, even terrorizing. But that is precisely what makes this study important.

The "Muhammad's Own Words" appendix isn't the best way to learn about Muhammad or to understand his Qur'an. But its topical structure may be the most effective means to evaluate his religion. This format facilitates the study of important issues from various perspectives. Their relative significance can be evaluated based upon the volume of material relegated to them. So for your edification and convenience, this appendix collates nearly 3,000 verses from the Qur'an, Sira, Ta'rikh, and Hadith under subject headings like Fighting, War, Jihad, Murder, Thievery, and Intolerance. In contrast to the book, "Muhammad's Own Words" ends with Islamic creation and begins by focusing on the tools of tyranny and terror. They represent the dogma's least understood and most lethal pronouncements. I trust you'll find this endeavor as sobering as it is enlightening.

Every passage in this appendix is recorded in one of Islam's prime sources: the Sira (biography), Ta'rikh (history), Hadith (report), or Qur'an (recital). They are all documented. Each quote fell from Muhammad's lips, no matter how it was inspired. Every recital, whether surah or Hadith, was passed along to us by the same group of men and by the same means - hearsay. As you will discover, the message does not differ from source to source because the author was always the same.

Ishaq's Sirat Rasul Allah , provides the sole account of Muhammad's life and the formation of Islam written within 200 years of the prophet's death. It is a Hadith collection, consisting of oral reports from Muhammad and his companions. There is no earlier or more accurate source. While the character, message, and deeds portrayed within its pages are the antithesis of Christ's and his disciples, the Sira's chronological presentation is as indispensable to Muslims as are the Gospels to Christians. The Qur'an can't be understood or followed without it.

The Ta'rikh is the oldest, most trusted, and comprehensive history of Islam's formation and Muhammad's example, called Sunnah. It was compiled by Tabari. His History of al-Tabari is formatted like the Bible. It begins with Islamic creation and ends with the acts of Muhammad's companions. Tabari also composed Islam's most revered Ta'fir, or commentary, on the Qur'an. He was the dogma's first scholar. His history serves to explain Allah's Recital and Muhammad's Sunnah by way of his compilation's Hadith.

The most revered topical collections of early Islamic Traditions were compiled by Bukhari and Muslim. They, like this appendix, assort Hadith under important Islamic themes, such as Jihad, Islamic Raids, Knowledge, Creation, Fear, Taxes, Money, Witnesses, Punishment, and Predestination.

To confirm the validity and nature of the Islamic scriptures quoted herein, consider what Muslim scholars wrote in the preface of the Hadith and Qur'an: "Bukhari is a Collection of sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad, also known as the Sunnah. The reports of the Prophet's sayings and deeds are called Hadith. Bukhari lived a couple of centuries after the Prophet's death and collected his Hadith. Each report was checked for compatibility with the Qur'an, and the veracity of the chain of reporters had to be established." "The Qur'an is one leg of two which form the basis of Islam. The second is the Sunnah of the Prophet. What makes the Qur'an different from the Sunnah is its form. The Qur'an is quite literally the Word of Allah, whereas the Sunnah [which is composed exclusively of Hadith] was inspired by Allah but the wording and actions are the Prophet's."

When quoting from the Qur'an and Hadith, I have elected to use a blended translation. No language transfers perfectly - one word to another. Five of my twelve translations of the Qur'an were combined to create the most accurate conveyance of the message possible. For clarity and readability, I have trimmed unruly word patterns and meaningless repetitions, being careful not to alter the meaning or message of any passage. Insertions within parenthesis (like this) were added by the Arabic translators to fill in missing words or to clarify the text. Insertions within brackets [like this] represent my observations.

There are many reasons Islamic clerics are sensitive about having the Qur'an translated into a contemporary language. The most important are that they don't want anyone to know what it actually says or how poorly it's written, but we'll get to that in a moment. Muslims claim that Arabic was Allah's original tongue and that translations are simply paraphrases. But that would make Allah younger than man because Arabic is one of man's most recent dialects. Its written form didn't emerge until the 7th century. And most every important religious word, concept, and name used in the Qur'an was derived from Syriac, the language of Syrian Christians in the 6th century.

Muslims invest a quarter of their school day learning to recite the Qur'an - not reading it or understanding it. They simply learn to mouth its sounds in the arcane, inadequate, and odd dialect of Religious Arabic. That way they can be fooled into believing that it's "God's Book," and that it's written intelligently. Ignorant, they can be indoctrinated and thus manipulated by clerics and kings, even turned into human bombs when it serves Islam's interests.

If Muslims were to shed their yoke of ignorance, they would discover that the real reason those who indoctrinate them, control them, suppress them, fleece them, and abuse them want them deceived is that the actual message contained in Allah's Book is horrendous. It is more intolerant, racist, punitive, and violent than Hitler's Mein Kampf. There are one hundred vicious verses for every nice one. The book inspires infinitely more terror than peace.

They would also discover that the Qur'an is poorly written. There are countless meaningless words, foreign words, and missing words which is why translations differ so significantly - everyone is guessing as to what Muhammad thought Allah was trying to say. This is why Gerd Puin, the world's leading specialist in Arabic calligraphy and Qur'anic paleography, studying the oldest manuscripts, speaks with disdain about the willingness of Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to accept Islamic dogma. He says: "The Qur'an claims for itself that it is ' mubeen ,' or clear, but if you just look at it, you will see that every fifth sentence or so simply doesn't make sense. Many Muslims will tell you otherwise, but the fact is that a fifth of the Qur'an is just incomprehensible. This is what has caused the traditional anxiety regarding translation. If the Qur'an is not comprehensible, if it can't even be understood in Arabic, then it's not translatable into any language. That is why Muslims are afraid."

By reading the Qur'an in a language they actually understand, Muslims would find that there is no semblance of order in the central book of Islam either. The Qur'an is a jumbled mess without context, chronology, or rational transitions. It is only by rearranging the Qur'an in the order it was revealed and infusing it with the context of the chronological Hadith narratives, that the book begins to make sense. But by so doing, it becomes obvious that the Qur'an was simply a reflection of Muhammad's demented character and of his misplaced ambition. The more you know, the more you will come to despise the fraud Muhammad perpetrated on his fellow Arabs and they on human kind. To know the Qur'an is to reject Islam.

The documented references in "Muhammad's Own Words" were derived from English translations of ancient Islamic manuscripts. The Sirat Rasul Allah by Ibn Ishaq, circa 750 A.D., was edited and abridged by Ibn Hisham in 830 and translated by Alfred Guillaume under the title, The Life of Muhammad in 1955 by Oxford Press. The History of al-Tabari was written by Muhammad bin al-Tabari between 870 and 920 A.D. His work was translated and published in 1987-97 by S.U.N.Y. Press. I quote from volumes I, II, VI, VII, VIII, and IX. Al-Bukhari's Hadith, titled: Sahih Al-Bukhari - The True Traditions was collected by Imam Bukhari in 850 A.D. I have used the collector's original nomenclature. But be advised, the online versions were changed by Islamic apologists as a direct result of this book. To verify my quotes, you'll have to purchase a printed copy of the original translation by Muhammad Muhsin Khan. The following Qur'an translations were blended and amplified: Ahmed Ali, Pickthal, Noble by Muhammad Muhsin Khan (from the King Fahd Complex), Yusuf Ali, and Shakir. The Ahmed Ali translation is the most contemporary and the King Fahd is the most literal.

This appendix is not designed to replace the book. It is an aid for those who have read the book. Every quotation is presented chronologically in Prophet of Doom within the context of Muhammad's life. They are reviewed in juxtaposition to their adjacent passages. Finding the page upon which a Hadith from Ishaq or Tabari is covered is thus relatively simple since their authors observed a strict chronology. The higher the page number or volume, the later you'll find the reference in Prophet of Doom. But the Qur'an isn't as logical. So if you want to review its surahs within the context of chronology, place, circumstance, and adjacency, you'll have to use the Index and turn to the chapter in which the specific surah is presented.

Some of these quotes have been abridged so that non-topical material doesn't clutter the subject. Most of my explanatory comments have been removed and thus I strongly encourage you to read Prophet of Doom prior to using the appendix.

With that introduction, here are some confirmations from the Islamic scriptures that Islam condemns freedom and thinking: (Reminder: words inserted within [brackets] are mine. They were typically added to identify the subject or object of a sentence. Words inside (parenthesis) are from the translators. They were added to fill in missing words or for clarity.)

Qur'an 3:19 "Lo! religion with Allah (is) Surrender."

Ishaq:322 "Allah said, 'Do not turn away from Muhammad when he is speaking to you. Do not contradict his orders. And do not be a hypocrite, one who pretends to be obedient to him and then disobeys him. Those who do so will receive My [Allah's] vengeance. You must respond to the Apostle when he summons you to war."

Qur'an 8:24 "O Believers! Answer Allah and (His) Messenger when he calls you.... Fear the affliction and trial that awaits those who do not obey. Allah is severe."

Qur'an 4:80 "He who obeys the Messenger obeys Allah."

Tabari VIII:182 "The people assembled in Mecca to swear allegiance to the Messenger in submission. He received from them the oath of allegiance to himself, to heed and obey."

Bukhari:V4B52N203 "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'He who obeys me, obeys Allah, and he who disobeys me, disobeys Allah. He who obeys the chief, obeys me, and he who disobeys the chief, disobeys me.'"

Qur'an 33:36 "It is not fitting for a Muslim man or woman to have any choice in their affairs when a matter has been decided for them by Allah and His Messenger. They have no option. If any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a wrong Path."

Qur'an 87:10 "He who fears will mind."

Qur'an 47:21 "Were they to obey, showing their obedience in modest speech after a matter had been determined for them, it would have been better."

Qur'an 47:33 "Believers, obey Allah, and obey the Messenger. Do not falter; become faint-hearted, or weak-kneed, crying for peace."

Qur'an 4:114 "He who disobeys the Apostle after guidance has been revealed will burn in Hell."

Qur'an 49:14 "The desert Arabs say, 'We believe.' Say: 'You have no faith; but you (only) say, "We submit." For not yet has Faith entered you. But if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not belittle your deeds.' Only those are Believers who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and have never since doubted, and have striven with their belongings and lives in the Cause of Allah."

Qur'an 49:16 "Say: ‘What! Will you instruct Allah about your religion?' They impress you (Muhammad) that they have Surrendered (Islam). Say, ‘Count not your Surrender as a favor to me: Nay, Allah lays you under an obligation."

Qur'an 9:53 "Say: ‘Pay your contribution for the Cause willingly or unwillingly.'"

Qur'an 5:4 "This day I have perfected your religion and have chosen for you Submission as your religion."

Qur'an 5:7 "Remember Allah's covenant which He ratified with you, when you said: ‘We hear and we obey.' And fear Allah."

Qur'an 48:10 "Verily those who swear allegiance to you (Muhammad), indeed swear their allegiance to Allah."

Qur'an 56:57 "Admit the truth and then surrender."

Bukhari: V9B89N256 "Allah's Apostle said, ‘You should listen to and obey your ruler even if he is a black African slave whose head looks like a raisin.'"

Bukhari:V9B89N258 "The Prophet said, ‘A Muslim has to listen to and obey the order of his ruler whether he likes it or not.'" [There will never be a stable Islamic democracy.]

Qur'an 58:46 "Obey Allah and His Messenger; and do not dispute!"

Qur'an 64:12 "So obey Allah, and obey His Messenger (Muhammad)."

Qur'an 24:53 "They swear their strongest oaths saying that if only you would command them. They would leave their homes (and go forth fighting in Allah's Cause). Say: ‘Swear not; Obedience is (more) reasonable.' Say: ‘Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger."

Qur'an 4:59 "Believers, obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority. If you dispute any matter, refer it to Allah and His Messenger. That is best, and most suitable for final determination."

Qur'an 4:64 "We sent not a messenger but to be obeyed, in accordance with the will of Allah." Qur'an 4:65 "But no, by the Lord, they can have no Faith until they make you (Muhammad) judge in all disputes, and find in their souls no resistance against Your decisions, and accept them with complete submission."

Qur'an 4:83 "When there comes to them some matter regarding war, they discuss it. If only they had referred it to the Messenger, or to those charged with authority."

Qur'an 4:115 "If anyone contradicts or opposes the Messenger after guidance has been conveyed to him, and follows a path other than the way, We shall burn him in Hell!"

Bukhari:V9B92N384 "Allah's Apostle said, ‘Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me will not.'"

There are two Qur'anic verses in particular that condemn Muslims to live in religious, economic, intellectual, and civil poverty. One says: Qur'an 4:89 "If they turn back from Islam, becoming renegades, seize them and kill them wherever you find them." The other commands: Qur'an 5:101 "Believers! Do not ask questions about things which if made plain and declared to you, may vex you, causing you trouble." Qur'an 5;102 "A people before you did ask such questions, and on that account they lost their faith and became disbelievers." It's true; the Qur'an is so incomprehensible, so obviously fraudulent, so mean spirited, anyone who even questions it loses their faith. So we need to give Muslims the freedom to ask questions and to make choices.

The Wahhabism [Islam] that the Saudi monarchy enforces, and on which it bases its legitimacy, is shown in these documents as a fanatically bigoted, xenophobic and sometimes violent ideology. These publications articulate its wrathful dogma, rejecting the coexistence of different religions and explicitly condemning Christians, Jews, all other non-Muslims, as well as non-Wahhabi Muslims [Moderate/Peaceful Ex-Muslims Hypocrites] . The various Saudi publications gathered for this study state that it is a religious obligation for Muslims to hate Christians and Jews and warn against imitating, befriending, or helping such "infidels" in any way. They instill contempt for America because the United States is ruled by legislated civil law rather than by totalitarian Wahhabi-style Islamic law. Some of the publications collected for this study direct Muslims not to take American citizenship as long as the country is ruled by infidels and tells them, while abroad, above all, to work for the creation of an Islamic state. [According to the Constitution, that is treason.] The Saudi textbooks and documents spread throughout American mosques preach a Nazi-like hatred for Jews, treat the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion as historical fact, and avow that the Muslim's duty is to eliminate the state of Israel. Regarding women, the Saudi state publications in America instruct that they should be veiled, segregated from men and barred from certain employment and roles.

This paragraph suggests that it is Saudi Wahhabism, rather than fundamental Islam, that is anti secularism, Christian, Jew, moderate Muslim, and women. In actuality, the Qur'an and Hadith are responsible. Since the report has sections dedicated to Christians, Jews, and Women, I'll address them later and focus on Islamic scriptures that are either generally intolerant or specifically hostile to Moderate/Peaceful ex-Muslim Hypocrites at this time. Read only as many of them as are required for you to render a just verdict.

Qur'an 48:11 "The desert Arabs who lagged behind [in fighting] will say to you (Muhammad): ‘We were engaged in (looking after) our flocks and our families.' We [Allah] have prepared for them a Blazing Fire!"

Qur'an 48:17 "There is no blame for the blind, nor is it a sin for the lame, nor on one ill if he joins not in the fighting. But he who retreats, (Allah) will punish him with a painful doom."

Qur'an 4:77 "Have you not seen those to whom it was said: Withhold your hands from fighting, perform the prayer and pay the zakat. But when orders for fighting were issued, a party of them feared men as they ought to have feared Allah. They say: ‘Our Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us, why have You made war compulsory?'"

Qur'an 4:78 "Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you are in towers built up strong and high! If some good befalls, they say, ‘This is from Allah;' but if evil, they say, ‘This is from you (Muhammad).' Say: ‘All things are from Allah [and that would include his Hadith].' So what is wrong with these people, that they fail to understand these simple words?"

Qur'an 4:88 "What is the matter with you that you are divided about the Hypocrites? Allah has cast them back (causing their disbelief). Would you guide those whom Allah has thrown out of the Way? For those whom Allah has thrown aside and led astray, never shall they find the Way."

Qur'an 4:89 "They wish that you would reject Faith, as they have, and thus be on the same footing: Do not be friends with them until they leave their homes in Allah's Cause. But [and this is a hell of a but...] if they turn back from Islam, becoming renegades, seize them and kill them wherever you find them."

Qur'an 47:20 "Those who believe say, ‘How is it that no surah was sent down (for us)?' But when a categorical [decisive or uncompromising] surah is revealed, and fighting and war (Jihad, holy fighting in Allah's Cause) are ordained, you will see those with diseased hearts looking at you (Muhammad) fainting unto death. Therefore woe unto them!"

Qur'an 47:21 "Were they to obey, showing their obedience in modest speech, after the matter (of preparation for Jihad) had been determined for them, it would have been better. Is it to be expected that if you were put in authority and given command that you would do mischief in the land. Such men are cursed by Allah. He has made them deaf, dumb and blind."

Qur'an 4:97 "Verily, when angels take the souls of those who die wronging themselves (by staying home), they say: ‘In what (plight or engagement) were you?' They reply: ‘Weak on the earth.' Such men will find their abode in Hell, an evil resort!"

Qur'an 9:16 "Do you think you will get away before Allah knows who among you have striven hard and fought?"

Qur'an 9:38 "Believers, what is the matter with you, that when you are asked to march forth in the Cause of Allah (i.e., Jihad) you cling to the earth? Do you prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? Unless you march, He will afflict and punish you with a painful torture, and put others in your place. But you cannot harm Him in the least."

Qur'an 9:43 "May Allah forgive you (Muhammad). Why did you grant them leave (for remaining behind; you should have persisted as regards to your order to them to proceed on Jihad), until you had known the liars."

Qur'an 9:44 "Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask for an exemption from fighting with your goods and persons. And Allah knows well those who do their duty."

Qur'an 9:45 "Only those [peaceful, hypocritical Muslims] ask for exemption (from Jihad) who believe not in Allah and whose hearts are in doubt, so that they are tossed to and fro. If they had intended to march out to fight, they would certainly have made some preparation and readied their equipment; but Allah was averse to their being sent forth; so He made them lag behind. ‘Sit you among those who sit.' If they had marched with you, they would not have added to your (strength) but only (made for) discord, spying and sowing sedition. There would have been some in your midst who would have listened to them. But Allah knows well those [peace-loving Muslims] who do wrong and are wicked."

Qur'an 9:48 "They had plotted sedition before, and upset matters for you until the Decree of Allah [to fight] became manifest, much to their disgust. Among them are many who say: ‘Grant me exemption to stay back at home (exempted from Jihad). And do not tempt me [with promises of booty].' Have they not fallen into temptation already? Indeed, Hell surrounds them."

Qur'an 9:67 "The Hypocrites enjoin what is forbidden, and forbid what Islam commands. They withhold their hands (from spending in Allah's Cause [Jihad]). They have forgotten Allah so He has forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are oblivious, rebellious and perverse."

Qur'an 9:68 "Allah has promised the Hypocrites, both men and women, and the disbelievers the Fire of Hell for their abode: Therein shall they dwell. It will suffice them. On them is the curse of Allah, and an enduring punishment, a lasting torment."

Qur'an 9:74 "The Hypocrites swear by Allah that they said nothing, but indeed they uttered blasphemy, and they disbelieved after Surrender (accepting Islam). They meditated a plot which they were unable to carry out. The reason for this revenge of theirs was the bounty [spoils of war] with which Allah and His Messenger had enriched them! If they repent, it will be best for them; but if they turn back, Allah will punish them with a grievous torment in this life and in the Hereafter."

Qur'an 9:75 "Some of you made a deal with Allah, saying, ‘If You give us booty we shall pay You the tax.' But when He gave them booty, they became greedy and refused to pay. As a consequence of breaking their promises, Allah filled their hearts with hypocrisy which will last forever."

Qur'an 9:77 "He punished them by putting hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day whereon they shall meet Him, because they lied to Allah and failed to perform as promised. Allah knows their secrets. Those who slander and taunt the believers who pay the zakat (for Allah's Cause) voluntarily and throw ridicule on them, scoffing, Allah will throw back their taunts, and they shall have a painful doom. Whether you ask for their forgiveness or not, (their sin is unforgivable). If you ask seventy times for their forgiveness Allah will not forgive them."

Qur'an 9:81 "Those who stayed behind rejoiced in their inaction behind the back of the Messenger. They hated to strive and fight with their goods and lives in the Cause of Allah. They said, ‘Go not forth in the heat.' Say, ‘The fire of Hell is fiercer in heat.' If only they could understand! So let them laugh a little, for they will weep much as a reward for what they did. If Allah brings you back (from the campaign) to a party of the hypocrites and they ask to go out to fight, say: ‘You shall never go out to fight with me against a foe. You were content sitting inactive on the first occasion. So sit with the useless men who lag behind.' Do not pray for any of them (Muhammad) that die, nor stand at his grave. They rejected Allah and disbelieved His Messenger. They died in a state of perverse rebellion."

Qur'an 9:85 "And let not their wealth or (following in) sons dazzle you or excite your admiration. Allah's plan is to punish them with these things in this world, and to make sure their souls perish while they are unbelievers. When a surah comes down enjoining them to believe in Allah and to strive hard and fight along with His Messenger, those with wealth and influence among them ask you for exemption from Jihad. They prefer to be with (their women), who remain behind (at home). Their hearts are sealed and so they understand not."

Qur'an 9:88 "The Messenger and those who believe him, strive hard and fight jihad with their wealth and lives (in Allah's Cause)."

Qur'an 9:90 "And there were among the wandering desert Arabs men who made excuses and came to claim exemption (from the battle). Those who lied to Allah and His Messenger sat at home. Soon will a grievous torment seize them."

Qur'an 9:93 "The (complaint) is against those who claim exemption [from fighting] while they are rich. They prefer to stay with the (women) who remain behind (at home). Allah has sealed their hearts. They are content to be useless. Say: ‘Present no excuses: we shall not believe you.' It is your actions that Allah and His Messenger will observe. They will swear to you by Allah, when you return hoping that you might leave them alone. So turn away from them, for they are unclean, an abomination, and Hell is their dwelling-place, a fitting recompense for them."

Qur'an 9:97 "The Arabs of the desert are the worst in unbelief and hypocrisy, and most fitted to be in ignorance of the command which Allah hath sent down to His Messenger. Some of the Bedouins look upon their payments (for Allah's Cause) as a fine and wish disasters to fall on you (so that they might not have to pay). Yet on them be the disaster of evil."

Qur'an 9:101 "Among the desert Arabs are hypocrites. They, like the people of Medina are obstinate in hypocrisy. We know them. Twice shall We punish them, and in addition they shall be brought back to a horrible torment."

Qur'an 9:120 "It is not fitting for the people of Medina and the Bedouin Arabs to refuse to follow Allah's Messenger (Muhammad when fighting in Allah's Cause), nor to prefer their own lives to his life. They suffer neither thirst nor fatigue in Allah's Cause, no do they go without reward. They do not take steps to raise the anger of disbelievers, nor inflict any injury upon an enemy without it being written to their credit as a deed of righteousness."

Tabari IX:13 "Muhammad turned to see Umm, a pregnant woman, who said, ‘O Messenger! Kill those [Muslims] who flee from you as you kill those who fight you, for they deserve death. Here is my dagger. If any come near me I will rip them up and slit open their belly with it.'"

Tabari IX:49 "One of the hypocrites, feeling an aversion to battle, being skeptical of the truth, and spreading false rumors about Muhammad, said that they should not go out in the heat. With regard to him, Allah revealed: ‘They said, "Do not march out in the heat." Say, "The heat of hell is far more intense."'"

Ishaq:602 "Jadd told Muhammad, ‘Will you allow me to stay behind and not tempt me? Everyone knows that I am strongly addicted to women. I'm afraid that I'll see Byzantine women and will not be able to control myself.' The Apostle gave him permission to remain behind. It was about him that Allah sent down: ‘There are some who say: "Give me leave to stay behind and do not tempt me." Surely they have fallen into temptation already and hell encompasses these unbelievers.' (9:49) It was not that he feared the temptation from the Byzantine women. The temptation he had fallen into was greater in that he had hung back from the Apostle and sought to please himself rather than Muhammad. Verily hell awaits him."

Ishaq:603 "One of the estranged ones said to another, ‘Don't go out to fight in this heat.' He disliked strenuous war, doubted the truth, and created misgivings about the Apostle. So Allah sent down regarding them, ‘And they said, "Do not go out in this heat." Say, "The fires of hell are hotter. Let them laugh a little now for they will weep a great deal later as a reward for what they did.'" (5:82)

Ishaq:603 "Some Bedouins came to apologize for not going into battle, but Allah would not accept their excuses."

Ishaq:246 "The surah of the Hypocrites came down because some men sent secret messages to the Nadir Jews when the Apostle besieged them. So Allah sent down, "Have you not considered the Hypocrites who say to their brethren, the People of the Book [Jews], ‘We shall never obey anyone against you. If you are attacked and driven out we will help you. Allah bears witness that they are liars.'"

In these documents, other Muslims, especially those who advocate tolerance, are condemned as infidels. [Having read the verses from the Qur'an and Hadith quoted above, you know why.] The opening fatwa in one Saudi embassy-distributed booklet responds to a question about a Muslim preacher in a European mosque who taught that it is not right to condemn Jews and Christians as infidels. The Saudi state cleric's reply rebukes the Muslim cleric: "He who casts doubts about their infidelity leaves no doubtabout his." Since, under Saudi law, "apostates" from Islam can be sentenced to death, this is an implied death threat against the tolerant Muslim imam, as well as an incitement to vigilante violence. Other Saudi fatwas in the collection declare that Muslims who engage in genuine interfaith dialogue are also "unbelievers." As for a Muslim who fails to uphold Wahhabi sexual mores through homosexual activity or heterosexual activity outside of marriage, the edicts found in American mosques advise, "it would be lawful for Muslims to spill his blood and to take his money." Sufi and Shiite Muslims are also viciously condemned. Regarding those who convert out of Islam, it is explicitly asserted, they "should be killed."

Intolerance of Christians, Jews, peaceful Muslims and all non-Muslims is also fundamental to Islam. While I will post the preponderance of the Qur'anic and Hadith passages on the victimization of Christians and Jews beneath the sections labeled for them, here is are some generic quotes on the subject intolerance.

Qur'an 8:12 "I will terrorize the unbelievers. Therefore smite them on their necks and every joint and incapacitate them. Strike off their heads and cut off each of their fingers and toes."

Qur'an 8:13 "This because they rejected Allah and defied His Messenger. If anyone opposes Allah and His Messenger, Allah shall be severe in punishment. That is the torment: ‘So taste the punishment. For those infidels who resist there is the torment of Hell.'"

Qur'an 8:20 "Those who do not obey are the worst of beasts, the vilest of animals in the sight of Allah. They are deaf and dumb. Those who do not understand are senseless."

Qur'an 8:36 "The unbelievers spend their wealth to hinder (man) from the Way of Allah, and so will they continue to spend; but in the end they will have intense regrets and sighs. It will become an anguish for them, then they will be subdued. The unbelievers shall be driven into hell in order that Allah may distinguish the bad from the good and separate them. Allah wants to heap the wicked one over the other and cast them into Hell. They are the losers."

Qur'an 8:39 "So fight them until there is no more disbelief [non-Muslims] and all submit to the religion of Allah alone (in the whole world)."

Qur'an 8:50 "If you could have seen the infidels when the angels drew away their souls, striking their faces and smiting their backs. The angels said: ‘Taste the penalty of the blazing Fire.'" Qur'an 8:52 "They denied and rejected the revelations of Allah, and Allah destroyed them, punishing them for their crimes: for Allah is strict, severe in punishment." Qur'an 8:59 "The infidels should not think that they can get away from us. Prepare against them whatever arms and weaponry you can muster so that you may terrorize them."

Qur'an 9:2 "You cannot weaken Allah or escape. Allah will disgrace the unbelievers and put those who reject Him to shame." Qur'an 9:4 "You cannot escape Allah, weaken or frustrate Him. And proclaim a grievous penalty of a painful doom to those who reject [Islamic] Faith."

Qur'an 9:17 "The disbelievers have no right to visit the mosques of Allah while bearing witness against their own souls to infidelity. These it is whose doings are in vain, and in the fire shall they abide. Only he shall visit the mosques of Allah who believes in Allah and the latter day, and keeps up devotional obligations, pays the zakat, and fears none but Allah."

Qur'an 9:28 "Believers, truly the pagan disbelievers are unclean."

Qur'an 9:30 "The Jews call Uzair (Ezra) the son of Allah, and the Christians say that the Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their saying from their mouths; they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah's (Himself) fights against them, cursing them, damning and destroying them. How perverse are they!" Qur'an 9:33 "He has sent His Messenger (Muhammad) with guidance and the Religion of Truth (Islam) to make it superior over all religions, even though the disbelievers detest (it)."

Qur'an 9:63 "Know they not that for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger is the Fire of Hell wherein they shall dwell? That is the supreme disgrace." Qur'an 9:66 "Make no excuses: you have rejected Faith after you had accepted it. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you, for they are disbelievers." Qur'an 9:71 "O Prophet, strive hard [fighting] against the unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be harsh with them. Their abode is Hell, an evil refuge indeed."

Qur'an 9:113 "It is not fitting for the Prophet and those who believe, that they should pray for the forgiveness for disbelievers, even though they be close relatives, after it is clear to them that they are the inmates of the Flaming Hell Fire."

Qur'an 5:10 "Those who disbelieve and deny Our signs, proofs and verses will be companions of Hell-Fire."

Qur'an 5:51 "Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends."

Qur'an 5:78 "Curses were pronounced on the unbelievers, the Children of Israel who rejected Islam, by the tongues of David and of Jesus because they disobeyed and rebelled." Qur'an 5:80 "You see many of them allying themselves with the Unbelievers [other translations read: "Infidels"]. Vile indeed are their souls. Allah's wrath is on them, and in torment will they abide." Qur'an 5:82 "You will find the Jews and disbelievers [defined as Christians in 5:73] the most vehement in hatred for the Muslims."

Qur'an 5:86 "Those who reject Islam and are disbelievers, denying our Signs and Revelations - they shall be the owners of the Hell Fire."

Qur'an 4:168 "Those who reject [Islamic] Faith, Allah will not forgive them nor guide them to any path except the way to Hell, to dwell therein forever. And this to Allah is easy."

Qur'an 4:114 "He who disobeys the Apostle after guidance has been revealed will burn in Hell."

Ishaq:344 "We smote them and they scattered. The impious met death. They became fuel for Hell. All who aren't Muslims must go there. It will consume them while the Stoker [Allah] increases the heat. They had called Allah's Apostle a liar. They claimed, ‘You are nothing but a sorcerer.' So Allah destroyed them."

Qur'an 33:60 "Truly, if the Hypocrites stir up sedition, if the agitators in the City do not desist, We shall urge you to go against them and set you over them. They shall have a curse on them. Whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain without mercy - a fierce slaughter - murdered, a horrible murdering."

Qur'an 33:64 "Verily Allah has cursed the Unbelievers [whom he defines as Christians in the 5th surah] and has prepared for them a Blazing Fire to dwell in forever. No protector will they find, nor savior. That Day their faces will be turned upside down in the Fire. ‘Our Lord! Give them double torment and curse them with a very great Curse!'"

Qur'an 88:1 "Has the narration reached you of the overwhelming (calamity)? Some faces (all disbelievers, Jews and Christians) that Day, will be humiliated, downcast, scorched by the burning fire, while they are made to drink from a boiling hot spring."

Bukhari:V1B11N617 "Muhammad would order someone to collect firewood and another to lead prayer. Then he would burn the houses of men who did not present themselves at the compulsory prayer and prostration."

Bukhari:V1B11N626 "The Prophet said, ‘No prayer is harder for the hypocrites than the Fajr. If they knew the reward they would come to (the mosque) even if they had to crawl. Certainly I decided to order a man to lead the prayer and then take a flame to burn all those who had not left their houses for the prayer, burning them alive inside their homes.'"

Bukhari:V4B52N260 "The Prophet said, ‘If a Muslim discards his religion, kill him.'"

Qur'an 74:31 "We have appointed nineteen angels to be the wardens of the Hell Fire. We made a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve and We have fixed their number as a trial for unbelievers in order that the People of the Book may arrive with certainty, and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book, those in whose hearts is a disease."

Bukhari:V4B54N487 "The Prophet said, ‘The Hell Fire is 69 times hotter than ordinary worldly fires.' So someone said, ‘Allah's Apostle, wouldn't this ordinary fire have been sufficient to torture the unbelievers?'"

Qur'an 72:15 "The disbelievers are the firewood of hell." Qur'an 72:17 "If any turns away from the reminder of his Lord (the Qur'an), He will thrust him into an ever growing torment, and cause for him a severe penalty."

Qur'an 72:25 "Whoever disobeys the Lord and His Messenger then there is for him the fire of Hell where they shall abide forever."

Qur'an 88:21 "You are not a warden over them; except for those who turn away and disbelieve, in which case, he will be punished with the severest punishment. Verily to Us they will return."

Qur'an 90:19 "But those who reject Our Signs, Proofs, and Verses, they are the unhappy Companions of the Left Hand. Fire will be their awning, vaulting over them."

Qur'an 95:4 "We have created man in the best molds. Then do We abase him, reducing him to be the lowest of the low, except such as believe."

Tabari VIII:130 "The Messenger said, ‘Two religions cannot coexist in the Arabian Peninsula.' Umar investigated the matter, then sent to the Jews, saying: ‘Allah has given permission for you to be expelled."

Qur'an 2:64 "But you [Jews] went back on your word and were lost losers. So become apes, despised and hated. We made an example out of you."

Qur'an 66:9 "O Prophet! Strive hard against the unbelieving Infidels and the Hypocrites; be severe against them. Their abode is Hell, an evil resort."

Qur'an 60:5 "We reject you. Hostility and hate have come between us forever, unless you believe in Allah only.'"

Qur'an 48:13 "If any believe not in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared a Blazing Fire for them!"

Qur'an 48:28 "It is He Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth (Islam), that he may make it superior to every other religion, exalting it over them. Allah is a sufficient Witness. Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah. Those who are with him are severe with Infidel unbelievers."

Tabari IX:78 "No polytheist shall come near the Holy Mosque, and no one shall circumambulate Allah's House naked."

Ishaq:246 "Hypocrites used to assemble in the mosque and listen to the stories of the Muslims and laugh and scoff at their religion. So Muhammad ordered that they should be ejected. They were thrown out with great violence. Khalid went to Amr, took his foot and dragged him out of the mosque. Another Muslim slapped a man's face while dragging him forcefully, knocking him down. One was pulled violently by his hair. ‘Don't come near the Apostle's mosque again, for you are unclean.' The first hundred verses of the Cow surah came down in reference to these Jewish rabbis and Hypocrites."

Ishaq:262 "Some Muslims remained friends with the Jews, so Allah sent down a Qur'an forbidding them to take Jews as friends. From their mouths hatred has already shown itself and what they conceal is worse."

Qur'an 5:51 "Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends. They are but friends and protectors to each other."

Ishaq:245 "The Apostle used to say, ‘Their religion will never march with ours.'"

Bukhari:V4B52N288 "Expel disbelievers from the Arabian Peninsula.'"

Qur'an 2:191 "Slay them wherever you find and catch them, and drive them out from where they have turned you out; for persecution and oppression are worse than slaughter."

Qur'an 33:25 "Allah drove the disbelievers back...and helped the believers in battle.... He terrorized the People of the Book so that you killed some and made many captive."

Tabari IX:167 "Muhammad waged war against the false prophets by sending messengers with instructions to get rid of them by artful contrivance [plot or machination]."

Bukhari:V5B59N727 "When Allah's Apostle became seriously sick, he started covering his face with a woolen sheet. When he felt short of breath, he removed it, and said, ‘That is so! Allah's curse be on Jews and Christians.'"

Qur'an 21:98 "Verily you (disbelieving Infidels), and the gods that you worship besides Allah, are the fuel for Hell, faggots for the fire! Certainly you will enter it! Had their (idols) been (real) alihah (gods), they would have kept them out of Hell. Therein, sobbing will be your lot. Breathing with deep sighs, roaring. You will hear nothing but wailing and groaning."

Qur'an 18:103 "Say: ‘Shall we inform you of who will be the greatest losers? ...Those who reject my Revelations... Hell is their reward, because they rejected Islam, and took My proofs, verses, and lessons, and those of My Messengers by way of jest in mockery.'"

Qur'an 52:9 "Woe to those who reject [me], that play in shallow trifles and sport in vain discourses. That Day they will be pushed down by force, thrust with a horrible thrust into the Fire of Hell. Unable to resist, they shall be driven to the fire with violence."

Qur'an 40:10 "Lo, those who disbelieve will be informed by proclamation: ‘Verily Allah's abhorrence is more terrible than your aversion to yourselves. Allah's hatred of you is terrible, seeing that you were called to the Faith [of submission] and you refused.'"

Qur'an 40:35 "Those who dispute the Signs and Verses of Allah without any authority, grievous and odious, hateful and disgusting, is it in the sight of Allah and the Believers.'"

Ishaq:185 "Adam reviewed the spirits of his offspring. The infidels excited his disgust. I saw men with lips like camels. In their hands were pieces of fire like stones which they thrust into their mouths. They came out their posteriors."

Qur'an 20:48 "Verily it has been revealed to us that the Penalty of Doom awaits those who reject and deny."

Qur'an 20:101 "Grievous evil will the load on them. We shall gather the Mujrimun (disbeliever) blue or blind-eyed with thirst.... My Lord will blast them and scatter them as dust."

Qur'an 21:06 "We saved whom We pleased, and We destroyed the disbelievers."

Qur'an 21:10 "Verily, We have sent down for you a Book in which is your reminder. Have you then no sense? How many towns have We utterly destroyed because of their wrongs, exchanging them for other people? When they (felt) Our Torment, behold, they (began to) fly. Fly not, but return to that which emasculated you so that you may be interrogated. They cried: ‘Woe to us!' Their crying did not cease till We mowed them down as ashes silent and quenched."

Qur'an 21:98 "Verily you (unbelievers), and that which you worship besides Allah, are faggots for the Hell Fire! And come to it you will! There, sobbing and groaning will be your lot."

Qur'an 46:20 "On that Day the unbelievers will be placed before the Fire...but today shall you be rewarded with a penalty of humiliation."

Qur'an 59:4 "If any one resists Allah, verily Allah is severe in Punishment, stern in reprisal."

Ishaq:249 "Fear Hell, whose fuel is men and stones prepared for the infidels.'"

Qur'an 2:39 "Those who reject and deny Our Signs will be inmates of the Hell Fire and will abide there forever."

Qur'an 2:99 "We have sent down to you Manifest Signs; and none reject them but those who are perverse."

Qur'an 2:71 "The semblance of the infidels is one who shouts to one who cannot hear. They are deaf, dumb, and blind. They make no sense."

Qur'an 2:174 "Those who conceal Allah's revelations in the [Bible] Scripture Book, and thus make a miserable profit thereby [selling it to Muhammad], swallow Fire into themselves; Allah will not address them. Grievous will be their doom." Qur'an 2:175 "They are the ones who bartered away guidance for error and Torment in place of Forgiveness. Ah, what boldness (they show) for the Fire! (Their doom is) because Allah sent down the Book in truth but those who seek causes of dispute in the Book are in a schism of great opposition."

Qur'an 2:256 "There is no compulsion in religion."

Qur'an 4:90 "If they turn back from Islam, becoming renegades, seize them and kill them wherever you find them."

Bukhari:V5B59N572 "O Muslims, take not My enemies as friends, offering them kindness when they reject Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, and his Qur'an. And whoever does that, then indeed he has gone astray. You have come out to fight in My Cause, seeking My acceptance so do not be friendly with them, even in secret." (60:1)

Ishaq:231 "Muslims are one ummah (community) to the exclusion of all men. Believers are friends of one another to the exclusion of all outsiders."

Ishaq:363 "Say to those who do not believe you: ‘You will be vanquished and gathered into Hell, an evil resting place.'"

Qur'an 61:7 "Who does greater wrong than one who invents falsehood against Allah, even as he is being summoned to Submission? And Allah guides not the disbelievers. Their intention is to extinguish Allah's Light (by blowing) with their mouths: But Allah will complete His Light, even though the Unbelievers detest (it). It is He Who has sent His Messenger with Guidance and the Religion of Truth (Islam), that he may make it conquer all religion, even though the disbelievers hate (it)."

Qur'an 2:104 "To those who don't submit there is a grievous punishment."

Qur'an 3:4 "As a guidance to mankind, He sent down the criterion (to judge between right and wrong). Truly, for those who deny the proofs and signs of Allah, the torture will be severe; Allah is powerful, the Lord of Retribution."

Qur'an 3:10 "As for those who deny [Islam], neither their wealth nor their children will help them in the least against Allah. They shall be faggots for the fire of Hell." Qur'an 3:11 "The punishment of Allah is severe. So tell the unbelieving infidels: ‘You will surely be vanquished, seized by Allah, and driven to Hell. How bad a preparation.'"

Qur'an 3:26 "You [Allah] exalt whom You please and debase and humiliate whom You will. Those who believe should not take unbelievers as their friends...guard yourselves from them.... Allah commands you to beware of Him." Qur'an 3:32 "Say: ‘Obey Allah and His Messenger;' If they refuse, remember Allah does not like unbelieving infidels."

Qur'an 3:55 "Allah said, ‘Jesus, I will take you and raise you to Myself and rid you of the infidels (who have forged the lie that you are My son).... Those who are infidels will surely receive severe torment both in this world and the next; and none will they have as a savior for them." Qur'an 3:61 "If anyone disputes with you about Jesus being divine, flee them and pray that Allah will curse them." Qur'an 3:62 "This is the true account, the true narrative, the true explanation: There is no Ilah (God) except Allah; and Allah - He is the Mighty. And if they turn away, then lo! Allah is aware of the corrupters, the mischief-makers. Say: ‘People of the Book, come to common terms as an agreement between us and you: That we all shall worship none but Allah.'"

Qur'an 3:84 "Say (Muhammad): ‘We believe in Allah and that which is revealed to us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes [of Israel], and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered, bowing our will (in Islam).'" Qur'an 3:85 "If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (Surrender), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who are losers." Qur'an 3:87 "Of such, the reward is the curse of Allah, of His angels, and of all men, all together. Their penalty of doom will not be lightened."

Qur'an 3:118 "Believers! Take not into your intimacy those outside your religion (pagans, Jews, and Christians). They will not fail to corrupt you. They only desire your ruin. Rank hatred has already appeared from their mouths. What their hearts conceal is far worse. When they are alone, they bite off the very tips of their fingers at you in their rage. Say unto them: ‘Perish in your rage.'"

Qur'an 3:141 "This is so that Allah may test the faithful and destroy the unbelieving infidels." [Another translation:] "Allah's object is to purge those that are true in Faith and blight the disbelievers. This is so that Allah may test the faithful and destroy the unbelieving infidels."

Qur'an 3:150 "Soon We shall strike terror into the hearts of the Infidels, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be in the Fire!"

Qur'an 33:8 "He has prepared for the Unbelievers a grievous Penalty."

Qur'an 33:58 "And those who annoy or malign Muslims bear a crime of calumny and glaring sin."

Qur'an 24:39 "For those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in the desert. There is no water for the thirsty. He only finds Allah, who will pay him his due in Hell." Qur'an 23:40 "Soon they will regret. Torment and an awful cry will overtake them. We have made such men rubbish, like rotting plants. So away with the people."

Qur'an 24:57 "Never think that the unbelievers can escape in the land. Their abode is Fire!"

Qur'an 4:12 "Those who disobey Allah and His Messenger and transgress His limits will be admitted to a Fire, to abide therein: And they shall have a humiliating punishment."

I realize that I have provided a large quantity of these for you to read. My intent was not to overwhelm you, but instead to supply a sufficient quantity for you appreciate the fact that I have not cherry-picked the worst verses out of context to make a point. The scope of the problem is enormous. Moreover, since the Qur'an has no context, either the law of abrogation where less violent Meccan surahs are canceled and replaced by the universally vicious Medina revelations, or the preponderance of the evidence, prevails in determining Islamic doctrine.

Much of the commentary in the West on Wahhabi hate ideology is restricted to shallow statements that it is "strict" or "puritanical." The Saudi publications in this study show that there is much more of concern to Americans in this ideology than rigid sexual codes. They show that it stresses a dualistic worldview in which there exist two antagonistic realms or abodes that can never be reconciled -- Dar al-Islam and Dar al-Har, or Abode of War (also called Dar al-Kufr, Abode of the Infidel) -- and that when Muslims are in the latter, they must behave as if on a mission behind enemy lines. Either they are there to acquire new knowledge and make money to be later employed in the jihad against the infidels, or they are there to proselytize the infidels until at least some convert to Islam. Any other reason for lingering among the unbelievers in their lands is illegitimate, and unless a Muslim leaves as quickly as possible, he or she is not a true Muslim and so too must be condemned.

Muslims are not puritanical. That is a myth. The only scientific study done of uncivil and deviant behavior on a global basis was published by Dr. James DeMeo. His Saharasia confirms that Islamic nations are by far the most abusive of children, women and minorities. Islamic countries are also the most violent and the least free.

One insidious aspect of this propaganda is its aim to replace traditional and moderate interpretations of Islam with Wahhabi extremism. Wahhabism began only 250 years ago with the movement created by fanatical preacher Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab. Once a fringe sect in a remote part of the Arabian peninsula, Wahhabi extremism has been given global reach through Saudi government sponsorship and money, particularly over the past quarter century as it has competed with Iran in spreading its version of the faith.

This paragraph is one of the most erroneous and misleading in the entire FH study. First, the Saudi literature is conveying mainstream Islamic thought - not an extreme variant or fanatical interpretation of it. Every word found in these contemporary mosque documents is derived from the Qur'an, Hadith, Sira, and Ta'rikh. Therefore, the Saudi literature is a truthful conveyance of Muhammad's message, not a propagandist corruption of it.

Second, traditional Islam is indistinguishable from Wahhab Islam because Wahhab was a fundamentalist. Further, Wahhab didn't start a movement. There isn't a single original thought attributed to his preaching. And Wahhab liberated the core of what became Saudi Arabia from the Muslim Turks. He didn't hide in some remote corner of Arabia.

Third, the Sufis are the only sect of Islam known for moderation. Less than 1% of Muslims are Sufis. Further, to be a Sufi, one has to discard most of the Qur'an, all of the Sira and Ta'rikh, and start over with a fictional set of Hadith.

Forth, Wahhab didn't start a movement. He was a student of the 13^th century Syrian Taymiyah warriors who, themselves, followed the 8^th century el-Kharij terrorists, who in turn followed in the footsteps of Muhammad. What we read in the Saudi sponsored Wahhabi texts today is identical to the views expressed by Muhammad and Allah.

With its vast oil wealth and its position as guardian of Islam's two holiest sites, Saudi Arabia now claims to be the leading power within Islam and the protector of the faith, a belief stated in the Saudi Basic Law. Saudi Foreign Policy Adviser Adel al-Jubeir publicly states that "the role of Saudi Arabia in the Muslim world is similar to the role of the Vatican." Even as the Saudi state asserts that it strives to keep the faith "pure" and free of innovation, it invents a new role for itself as the only legitimate authority on Islam.

This is only partly accurate. Egypt remains the "thought leader" of the Islamic world. It boasts Islam's most prestigious university and its most influential "scholars." The Turks distrust the Saudis, and would never consider them to be "Islam's Vatican." And Shiite Muslims, like those in Iran and Iraq, despise Sunnis almost as much as the hate Christians and Jews. But it is true that Saudi Arabia is the leading "power" within Islam because money is power.

One example of how Saudi Arabia asserts its self-appointed role as the authoritative interpreter of Islam within the Muslim world is provided in a collection of fatwas published by the Saudi Embassy's Cultural Department in Washington. Its one-page introduction laments the dearth of competent Islamic scholars among Muslim emigrant communities abroad, and the confusion this has caused about Islamic beliefs and worship. The opening line reads, "The emigrant Muslim communities suffer in these countries from a lack of religious scholars ( ulema )." It states that this deplorable situation has led the highest committee of Islamic scholars in the Kingdom to offer authoritative replies to questions frequently asked by Muslims living in the non-Muslim world. These replies are given in authoritative pronouncements that the introduction urges should be official guides for preachers, mosque imams, and students living far from the Kingdom.

Saudi Wahhabism is dominant in many American mosques. Singapore's main newspaper ecently published an interview with Sheik Muhammad Hisham Kabbani, the Lebanese-American chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of America, based in Washington, D.C.: "Back in 1990, arriving for his first Friday prayers in an American mosque in Jersey City, he was shocked to hear Wahhabism being preached. ‘What I heard there, I had never heard in my native Lebanon. I asked myself: Is Wahhabism active in America? So I started my research. Whichever mosque I went to, it was Wahhabi, Wahhabi, Wahhabi, Wahhabi.'"

Within worldwide Sunni Islam, followers of Wahhabism and other hardline or salafist (literally translated as venerable predecessors) movements are a distinct minority. This is evident from the millions of Muslims who have chosen to make America their home and are upstanding, law-abiding citizens and neighbors. In fact it was just such concerned Muslims who first brought these publications to our attention. They decry the Wahhabi interpretation as being foreign to the toleration expressed in Islam and its injunction against coercion in religion. They believe they would be forbidden to practice the faith of their ancestors in today's Saudi Arabia, and are grateful to the United States and other Western nations for granting them religious freedom.

The fact this was written by an organization chaired by a Central Intelligence Agency Director speaks volumes about why we are so befuddled and vulnerable as a nation. Wahhab, like all Islamic imams, preached from the salaf texts, because the Qur'an is a salaf text, as are the Sira, Ta'rikh, and Hadith. In fact, apart from the salaf texts Muhammad, Allah, and Islam would be completely unknown and Islam would not exist. Therefore, to say " salafist movements are a distinct minority" is equivalent to saying that Christians who base their religion on the New Testament are a fringe group.

Wahhab was not himself a salaf as the " salaf are from Islam's first three generations: that of the Companions of the Prophet, that of the successors who knew the Companions, and that of the successors of the successors. Each successive generation's testimony is less authoritative." ( Concise Encyclopedia of Islam , page 344) Wahhab was a thousand years removed from the last salaf - more than forty generations distant. To attribute "hard line or salaftist movements" to Wahhabism, rather than to Muhammad, is moronic.

One of the most prevalent flaws in our thinking today is to define Islam by the behavior and opinions of one group of Muslims or another. If you want to prove that Islam is bad you focus on al-Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbullah, the Muslim Brotherhood, Black September, or Islamic Jihad, Saudi Arabia, the Sudan, East Timor, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, the Palestinians, Libya, or Somalia, PanAm 103, the Munich Olympics, the USS Cole, the Taliban atrocities, the weekly Palestinian and Iraqi suicide bombings, or the 1997 and 2001 World Trade Center attacks. If you want to demonstrate that Islam is peaceful, you focus on some ill-defined group with whom you ascribe values akin to your own.
