The Afghan Northern Alliance has been portrayed recently as an American ally. That is only true if the enemy of one's enemy is their friend. The Northern Alliance was a fundamentalist Islamic terrorist and militant group financed by Iran.

Their leader, Ahmed Shah Massoud, also known as "the Lion of the Panjshir," was assassinated by two Islamic suicide bombers posing as journalists. These clever Muslims concealed their bombs in a camera. Also killed was the Northern Alliance's Ambassador to India.

The suicide bombers were linked to both al Qaeda and Taliban religious fundamentalists. Good Muslim terrorists excuse the murder of bad Muslim moderates by suggesting that their rival's Islam isn't acceptable or pure enough.

But there is more to it than this, the Northern Alliance and the Taliban were religious rivals competing for the same turf just as Sunni and Shia Muslims are battling today over Iraq. The fighting in Afghanistan was a civil war between Shia forces financed by Iran and Sunni militants funded and equipped by Pakistan.

Commander Ahmad Shah Massood, who led the anti-Taliban alliance in Afghanistan, was an Islamic fundamentalist and a terrorist in addition to posing as an American ally. He was killed by the Taliban because, working with al-Qaeda, they knew what was going to happen in a couple of days, and they wanted to facilitate their retreat into Pakistan.
